ABOUT Josh Cooperman
My family and I moved to Louisville in January 2020 when my wife Aubryn started a permanent position at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. We chose Louisville on two bases: my wife’s one-evening visit while interviewing for her job and our subsequent online research into the community. Our decision was felicitous: we love living in Louisville, especially Ward 1. We love Louisville for its welcoming residents, walkable old town, bikeable streets, accessible small businesses, seasonal farmers’ market, neighborhood parks, extensive open spaces, system of paths and trails, communal amenities, excellent public schools, and responsible governance. We made our home in Ward 1 so that we could best access and enjoy what we love about Louisville. At first we rented a house in Steel Ranch; now we own a home in the Parkwood neighborhood. Our daughters went to the Patchwork School and now go to Louisville Elementary School.
Shortly after settling in Louisville, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, I start to civically engage: in my first public comment at a City Council meeting, delivered over Zoom from the privacy of our laundry room, I suggested that the City establish a transportation advisory board. My engagement swiftly mounted. I joined the Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board in January 2021. I volunteered for the Underpasses for Safe and Sustainable Connections campaign in the autumn of 2021. I facilitated the establishment of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) at the Louisville Farmers’ Market prior to its 2022 season. I volunteered for the Citizens for a Vibrant Sustainable Louisville campaign in the spring of 2022. I launched the blog Sustainable Louisville Colorado over the summer of 2022. After advocating for our City’s membership, I joined Louisville’s Bee City USA Committee in March 2023. I ran for mayor to advocate for a sustainable future and volunteered for the Open Space and Parks Sale Tax Extension campaign in the autumn of 2023. I founded the fledgling Louisville Sustainability Alliance in August 2024. Throughout, I have regularly attended and contributed to City Council, board, and commission meetings, and I have organized our community around a variety of issues.
On my journey to Louisville, I experienced and explored sundry places. I grew up on the Main Line of suburban Philadelphia. After graduating as salutatorian from Lower Merion High School, I attended Williams College in Massachusetts, where I earned a BA in physics and met my wife-to-be. We were both awarded fellowships to study at the University of Cambridge in England, where I earned an MPhil in history and philosophy of science. We continued our graduate educations at the University of California, Davis, where I earned an MSci and PhD in physics. We moved to the Netherlands to pursue postdoctoral fellowships, myself at Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Our first daughter Calla was born in Utrecht. We moved next to New York’s Hudson Valley, where I held a postdoctoral fellowship at Bard College. Our second daughter Esmae was born in Rhinebeck. We moved again to central Pennsylvania, where I taught as a visiting assistant professor at Bucknell University. Here in Louisville, I care for our daughters, cook for my family, look after our house and yard, and tutor physics at all levels. When I find a spare moment, I cycle Boulder County’s roads and trails. Visit my professional website for more information.
Now, encouraged and supported by friends and neighbors, I am running to represent and serve Louisville’s Ward 1 as a City Councillor. I wish to continue, broaden, and elevate my community involvement to truly make a difference for Ward 1 and the rest of Louisville. With your encouragement and support, together we will forge a thriving Louisville for generations to come.
